The Green Card Lottery

The standard process for immigrating to the United States is a lengthy one. So if you are considering permanent residency or citizenship in the US, there may be an easier way for you to obtain legal entrance through the Diversity Immigrant Program or Green Card Lottery.

The Green Card Lottery is governed on an annual basis by the Department of State and gives 50,000 immigrants per year permanent residence visas under the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Immigration Act of 1990.

Keep in mind, there are rules and regulations to being able to submit your information for the lottery draw. With millions of people trying to immigrate to the United States each year, there has to be some order in place.

First, the person wishing to immigrate to the United States must already fall under certain categories: they must have relatives or family already in the US, have an employer willing to sponsor them and cannot fall under refugee or asylum seeking status.

Next, the person must not be from a country or region where more than 50,000 people have immigrated in the last 5 years. People wishing to emigrate from the following countries will not be enrolled in the Lottery: Canada, Colombia, El Salvador, Haiti, Jamaica, Peru, South Korea, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Guatemala, Poland, Brazil, England, Scotland and India.

Entrance into the Green Card Lottery is free. There are many scams and fraudulent business charging people to fill out the lottery forms and claiming they can push their application through, but they are simply taking advantage of people. A person can submit their information, on their own and at no cost through the U.S. Department of State's website.
